Artists Gibbons and Rierden go their own way at Modern Arts Midtown
Notable contemporary artists deliberately avoid the mainstream, the middle of the road, and choose what the poet described as “the road not taken.” Which means they must then find their own way wherever it and their vision takes them. In June, Modern Arts Midtown features two such painters whose paths are motivated by creative rather than political notions of left and right. Sunny Gibbons offers mid and large size atmospheric and cosmic oils that move from the abstract to the representational and personal. Conversely, Tom Rierden begins with imaginative cartoon figures and scenarios in egg tempera and wax that move beyond the fanciful to the formal and conceptual. Polar opposites, each artist explores different hemispheres of the same world. - Michael J Krainak, freelance writer in the visual arts
