As She Sees It - Women artists take center stage at Modern Arts Midtown - By Michael J. Krainak

Knowing that As She Sees It, July’s art exhibit at Modern Arts Midtown, is an all-women’s group show, may imply to some a feminist tract, to others a simpler “woman’s touch.” In truth, it is neither extreme nor an average of the two. At a time when women artists are still under-represented and undervalued in the marketplace, MAM’s current exhibit clearly demonstrates that its stable of female 2D and3D artists create significant contemporary art regardless of gender.

The Challenge of Fun:Sumnik, Kochen and court show ‘comedy is king’ in June at MAM – by Michael J. Krainak

In a complex, postmodern world, it’s reassuring that there are artists who can step back from the fray with a sense of humor.
Mind you, they take their work seriously, but they remind us not to take our problems and ourselves so rigidly that we fail to take stock of life’s simple pleasures. Mark Twain said, “Laughter was our greatest weapon.” Lenny Bruce called it “the only honest art form.” Health sciences consider it the best medicine for what ails us.

Of Common Ground
Teresa Schmidt, Larry Roots explore the fields of abstraction at MAM
- by Michael J. Krainak, free lance writer in the visual arts

The title of Modern Arts Midtown’s new two-person exhibit in May, "Of Common Ground", is a bit of a paradox. Because, there is nothing ordinary about the show’s style of choice, abstraction, which the featured artists, Teresa Schmidt and Larry Roots nonetheless have in common.

March 1 - 30: Cool Abstraction showcases new work by Omaha artist Michael Tegland and UNO Professor Gary Day. Both Tegland’s graphite renderings on panel and Day’s enlarged stills of computer animations reinterpret our idea of abstraction. There is a modern detachment and distillation of our ideas about art as the idiom Cool Abstraction suggests and is further exemplified by works from John Andrews, Deon Bahr, Judith Burton, Chris Cassimatis, Colin C. Smith and Marjorie Mikasen.

You might think after 20 years as a successful graphic artist on behalf of such household brands as Union Pacific, Disney and Pepsi, among others, that any additional métier or passion would represent an alter ego. Not so for oil painter Edwin Carter Weitz of Lincoln, Nebraska whose art has arced beyond that of mere hobby or outlet. In fact, Weitz believes his short six-year “career” in landscape oils has been transformative.

Keep On Truckin’ 10.5.12
Artist Himmelfarb returns to Omaha via new ‘vehicle’ at MAM
by Janet L. Farber

Artists from outside Omaha have always had a presence in the local art scene. They help to keep the artistic landscape varied and lively, enhancing the conversation about how regional artists partake of a national or even international dialogue. Some of these “carpetbaggers” are shown but once, while others become returning favorites.
