As a painter and sculptor, I draw inspiration from the techniques and crafts of past masters and fuse them with contemporary issues that are important to me. I approach my artwork like an archaeologist in reverse: taking familiar objects from the present and representing them as mysterious relics of the past. I am especially drawn to pre-Renaissance iconography, and other periods in art history, when the shape of frames/formats became an integral part of the overall imagery. I usually sculpt and gild my own picture frames and consider them part of the work.
My most recent work explores the topic of genetic experimentation and other exotic technologies. In my work I try to underscore the inherent dangers of our rapidly changing world with a sense of playfulness. My mixed-media works are simulacra of antique scientific models and illustrations. I often combine different media that blur the boundary between painting and sculpture. I paint on sculpted forms as though they were 3-dimensional canvases. It is my hope that the work will spark discussion, debate and even chuckles among my viewers.
