Justin Meyers

I have always loved to draw since I was a child and I just never stopped. My works in graphite and charcoal strive to explore the use of simple material to portray simple subject matter and composition with a borderline eccentric approach to detail. By working in black and grey scale mediums, the absence of color allows for a more stripped down, immediate translation and connection with the viewer and their senses. I use my own photo references for many of my drawings based on sheer time involved with the creation. Though the references are useful, I find it absolutely necessary to interweave and add alternative and exterior elements of vision and life into the works in order to make them breathe. The slow process of rendering and layering in my creations allows me to become increasingly more intimate with the subject matter, in turn, leaving a small piece of myself intact with each piece.

 

Justin Meyers was born September 14, 1978 in Kearney Nebraska. His talent for capturing realism within his subjects was quickly noticed at a young age and was further nurtured by local patrons resulting in numerous commission works and national scholastic awards before he graduated from high school in Blair, Nebraska. Specializing primarily in graphite and charcoal drawings on paper, Meyers has spent the majority of his time focusing on the aspect of realism in portraiture and still life as his main strength within his body of work. Justin attended a number of different schools and universities around the Nebraska area during 1996 to 2000 before settling in Savannah, Georgia, where he graduated with a B.F.A. degree in painting in 2003. During his time in Savannah, Justin received a number of scholarships and grants including winning first place in the national American Society of Portrait Artists portfolio scholarship in 2000. Meyers currently lives around the Omaha, Nebraska, area where he works as a full time artist.
